PETERS ANGUS BULLS

What A Load of BULL!!!

As a result of moving from strength to strength in the Romney Ram breeding market, and with a desire to meet new challenges, Trevor Peters recently decided to venture into Angus Bull breeding. He purchased Stan Chambers complete well established Altonbrook Angus bull stud at Kunsandel five years ago and the Grooby's Mangarata stud at Clandeboye three years ago.

Currently he carries approximately 220 cows, which have been have been A.I.'d, 60 heifers naturally mated, 200 Weaners (Bull and Heifers), 30 R.2 Breeding Bulls, 30 R.2 Beef Bulls, and  6 Sire Bulls.

Currently the Angus breed leads the market in terms of numbers presented, sale turnovers and averages- thats not only national but it is also Australasian - and probably a global trend.

Thanks Ronald McDonald!

With McDonalds signing a deal to introduce 2 new premium Angus beef burgers the time couldnt be better for getting into the Angus beef trade. McDonalds will buy an extra 500,000kg of NZ Angus Beef in 2009, bringing it's annual beef total to approx 5.2 million kg. The new angus range will increase the total volume of quality NZ beef sourced by McDonalds by 10% in 2009 and will use independently verified angus beef from farms in Waikato, Canterbury, Taranaki and the Hawkes bay. In addition to raising awareness of Angus beef this initiative will provide Kiwis with the opportunity to enjoy premium quality 'grass fed' Angus beef burgers at an offordable price. Have you tried one yet?

Award Winner

Peters Angus Bull Livestock BreedersOn the Peters Angus Bull stud side we are one of 41 breeders who have had an '05 Angus bull on trial at the bull evaluation unit, monitoring performance. In 2006 we lead the field for growth weight with our Angus bull and won the award for most growth weight overall. The average daily gain was 1.77kg per day for 264 days. The average for all the bulls was 12.44kg.

Our bull was sold in May at the National Beef Expo sale in Palmy for $7800 and went to Wairoa. Angus bulls achieved the most consistent sales at this years on farm bull sales.

After being first in 2006 with one bull first time up, we had 2 bulls on trial at the evaluation breeding unit in Palmerston North in 2007. Our bulls were placed 6th and 8th respectively out of the 36 bulls represented from breeders around the country. All bulls had been fed solely on grass. Average daily gain for our bulls was 1.42 and 1.38. The Angus breed is well sought after and prices are very good for progency.

A Bull Sale with a Difference

Peters Angus Bulls Livestock BreedersLast year Trevor thought he would try something different, so he held what was believed to be the region's first-ever spring bull sale. He used to sell his bulls privately in the winter, but this year he decided to winter the bulls himsself on his hill country property, Wairere South Station at Millers Flat, and take them to auction in the spring. Wintering the bulls had been an extra cost, but he was able to present them in the best possible condition about six weeks before the start of mating.

"I know of people that buy bulls in the winter and they're not that happy with them when it comes to mating."

He would have to say he was happy with the outcome with 18 bulls selling for an average of $3177. The two top bulls sold for $4500 each to Brian Russell, of Dipton and Alan Johnston, of Gore.

He also decided to donate the proceeds of Lot 13, which made $2500, to Starship Children's Hospital, due to his month-old granddaughter having open heart surgery.

"We wanted to do something to help and give back to Starship"

He plans to continue with the spring bull sale concept and has plans to increase his cow numbers from 242 to 400 over the next five or six years.
