Liquid Fertiliser Trials

Murray Gemmell has been testing liquid fertilisers on his farms since 1996, and with the decision to promote these products, we thought it was time to reinstate Murray's practice of conducting monthly dry matter yeild tests.

Murray will take two cages and place them over two equivalent plots of pasture.  One of those plots will then have a solution of liquid fertiliser applied and the second will be the control with no fertiliser applied.

Monthly these cages will be cut and weighed and then the grass will be microwaved to remove all moisture content and then weighed again. This will give us our monthly dry matter yeild.

Additional data shall also be recorded such as the colour of the sward,  the dominant species of grass, the presence of low fertility species of weeds, and the difference in length. Further information shall also be recorded, such as rainfall for the month, weather conditions, soil temperature and stock grazing patterns noticed.

All Data will be posted here for you to read and make judgement upon once a month. Over time we hope these tests will become a useful resource and will assist other farmers in making well informed decisions with regard to their fertiliser budget and products uesd.
